Today's Lesson From The Craft Room: It Doesn't Take A Lot To Show How Much You Care
A simple card made with love with your own hands. Sometimes I want to make a card and I don't feel like I have the time or energy to really make one that I will be proud of or that will be perfect enough for the person I am sending it to. That's when I need to stop myself and realize that it doesn't take a lot to show someone how much I care. My card doesn't have to be complicated. It doesn't have to be perfect. And, it doesn't need to take a lot of time or energy. I can use the time and energy that I have and work with that! I arrived home late Thursday night after a substantial work trip and we wanted to get a Father's Day card in the mail early Friday so that it could make it in time for Father's Day. I needed to do my best given what time and energy I had and I found washi tape was a great and simple way to decorate this card in a flash! I die cut Basic Gray cardstock with the Hello You thinlits dies. I then stamped the "Father's Day" with Basic Gray ink and the Crazy For You stamp set. These were both adhered to a Mint Macaron card stock panel. Next came the Everyday Chic designer washi tape and some silver sequin stars. Quick, simple, and made with a ton of love!!!!

My travel schedule can get a bit nuts sometimes and I can find myself away from the craft room and the over abundance of art supplies that live there. So I now travel with a kit of random supplies...just in case the urge to create comes over me and I am in a hotel room, an airport, or some other place far far away. Lately I've added some cotton thread to the travel craft kit and I have been enjoying sewing into watercolor paper. This collage began when I was inspired by the sleeve on my drink from Caribou Coffee. The quote spoke to me and I began by adhering it to the center of the watercolor paper. Next I added some random painted papers and tapes that were in my kit. The sewing was the last addition. Lots of little meditative stitches in a combination of black and purple. Sometimes I take the kit with me and it never gets open. Other times it is the respite in my travels. Either way, it is always with me in case the urge to create strikes!

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room: Keep Moving Through The Process
I am amazed at how difficult it can be to begin a piece of art - whether it is an art journal page, a canvas, a mixed media creation, a card. It doesn't seem to matter. Showing up and beginning takes courage. The courage to face that inner critic that invariably joins you on the journey. I also find that I often want to abandon ship early in the creative process. I start judging and criticizing what I am doing almost as soon as I begin doing it! And, what I am continually learning, is that I need to just keep moving the process. Just keep going even when the judgement is there. Even when the criticism is there. Because if I'm not creating art, I'm not learning about creating art. It doesn't matter if I love, hate, or feel apathetic about the end result. What matters is that I am learning. I am doing. I am putting it out there and growing each time I have the courage to just create. The only true way to learn is to find the courage to create and going for it!
Today I am sharing another Art Journal Experiment. I like calling these videos "experiments" since it takes the pressure off of me a bit. It also lets you know that what you are watching is me trying to find my way with materials and techniques - so hopefully you are learning on the journey with me. Today's Lesson From The Craft Room: There Is Very Little Difference Between Burying And Planting
We dig up the ground. We place the seed, object, casket in the ground. We cover it again with soil. How perfect that the actions we take when we bury something are the same actions we take for planting something! Can this apply to other aspects of my life as well? That if I let something go it will actually give seed to something else? That if I grow something new, I can put something else to rest? Yes, there is very little difference between burying and planting.

I fall into this trap - paying attention to how much time it is taking me to get something done. The question that people often ask when they see a piece of art that was created..."How much time did that take?" I wonder why we are so focused on time - especially when it comes to making art. I wonder if we are getting in our own way when we start to view making art as punching a time clock? Does the time it takes really matter? What if we just took whatever time we had - whatever moments we might otherwise be spending in ways that do not nurture our souls - and instead take those moments and gift them to our art making? Keeping track of those moments is not required. All you need to do is make the art.
Today I am sharing an Art Journal Experiment with you. It began with the thought "What would happen if I tried to monoprint with freezer paper and gelatos?" and then it went from there. Come along on this journey with me as I explore the answer to that question and also learn how to seal the gelatos; stencil with the gelatos and blend the gelatos along the way. Today's Lesson From The Craft Room: Organizing Can Become An Excuse For Not Creating
I try to convince myself that if I just do a little bit of organizing then I will be in a better place to create. What I am realizing is that this is one of my excuses. One of the things I say or do to avoid having to face that blank piece of paper or that blank canvas. One of the excuses I have so that I don't have to come any closer to that inner critic - who, by the way, I have now named "Dr. Downer." Every time he shows up I can now think to myself, "Dr. Downer I presume?" I imagine that Dr. Downer shares an office with Dr. Doubt and that they have an assistant who answers the phone and says, "Downer & Doubt. How can we NOT help you?" Now that Dr. Downer has a name I am hoping I can tell him I am not in need of his services at this time :) Yes, organizing can be a wonderful thing...and it can also become an excuse for not creating.
Today I inked up the Blended Blooms stamp and the new Layered Letters Alphabet stamps with some Watermelon Wonder ink and went to town! I wasn't sure how I felt about this color, but after creating this card I'm feeling a lot more fond of it. Excuse the Naturals Ivory card stock - I realized after I created the card that this favorite card stock of mine is retired :( Some things we love go away and some things we never even knew we would like come into existence - ah the joys of catalog transition time! Good thing this color isn't scented to match its name or I would be in trouble :) I used the ink to stamp the sentiment and to sponge the doily. I also added the accompanying lace and embellishment. I have a feeling you are going to be seeing a lot more of this color in my upcoming creations!

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room: Your Choices Will Change The World
They called me their angel. It made me realize how such small actions can have such a large impact for people. I was on a plane from Ft. Worth to Denver last week and a couple came onto the plane. The woman sat next to me. The husband a few rows back. I noticed the woman struggling a bit with her seat belt, so I reached over to help. She thanked me and said that this was her first time to the United States. She was traveling with her husband from Pakistan and had been en route for over 20 hours. She slept a bit on the flight and when we landed I was about to walk by them in the terminal and I paused to tell them that I hope they had a wonderful trip visiting Denver and Chicago. They asked me where the baggage claim was and I said I would be more than happy to escort them there. We walked slowly - talking about their trip and their experiences so far. We stopped at a washroom before walking to the baggage claim area. I told them I would not leave them until we found their friend who was meeting them there. When we found their friend I wished them a beautiful trip and they told me I was their angel. They said that traveling to a new place can be confusing and stressful and that having me guide them was such a relief. Yes, your choices - even your choice to pause when you think you are in a rush - will change the world.

Today's Lesson From Outside The Craft Room: Provide Help For The Bees
"One-third of every bite we eat is due to a pollinator," Scott Black, executive director of the invertebrate conservation nonprofit Xerces Society told
the Huffington Post last year. He continued, "These pollinators are vital for us as humans, but they're
also vital for the planet -- we require animal pollination for 85
percent of flowering plants. These bees are producing the fruits and the
seeds from pollination that feed everything from songbirds to grizzly
bears." We forget how much we really on these beautiful pollinators and how different our lives would look without them.
The other day Michael and I were out for a walk with Buddy and we came upon a swarm of bees on the ground. They were wet and some were barely moving, but we had hope for them. We are comfortable around bees - we have a few bird baths in the backyard that we fill with a very low level of water so that the bees can come and get the water they need. Every so often a bee will land in the water and their body temperature quickly drops and they look as if they are dead. But we pick them up and blow on them to warm them up and it is amazing to watch them spring back to life and fly off on their journey. Sometimes we have even had to bring a bee in overnight - we have a little "bee box" that we created that we place flowers and sugar water in - because they won't fly at night. So when we saw this pile of bees, we knew there must be something we could do to help. We made a little lean-to with cardboard and a tarp (since rain was threatening) and then we hit the internet to find somehow who might help. We contacted Gregg McMahan (aka The Bee Guru here in Denver) by phone and he was able to send out a call to local beekeepers to see if someone could come and relocate this swarm. Within and hour and a half I was standing in the pouring rain with a beekeeper named Brent and a friend of his and we were capturing all the bees to be relocated to a safe spot where they could thrive! It was a thrill! The bees were totally willing participants - not an angry bee in the bunch! (I am not recommending relocating bees on your own - please consult an expert!!!). While we were waiting for Brent's arrival, someone walked by us and said, "Oh! Those bees have been there for a few days! When I was out the other day someone told me to be careful!" Learning this made me sad. Knowing that someone could have saved more of these bees had they made a call a few days earlier. Don't just walk by. See if you can help. Provide help for the bees - we need each other!

Flowers. Candy. Jewelry. Somehow the usual Mother's Day gifts just weren't exciting me this year. So I decided to whip up a quick homemade Mother's Day gift for my mom using the Flower Patch stamp set! Just stamps, ink and a few punches and I had everything I needed to create the perfect present for my mom. I love how these cards look like they are woodblock prints! I used some colors that are retiring and a few stamps that I have had in my stash for ages (Lovely Letters Alphabet is a set that I use over and over and can't imagine living without!). Expressing our feelings - letting those feelings out - through art can be incredibly cathartic. You may have noticed that my personal art posts on my blog have been a bit sporadic lately. Part of that is due to the chaos that found its way into my life over the past few months. I won't go into details. Needless to say, I found expressing some of those feelings in an art journal page was really helpful. I added a tab to the page and was able to do some private art journaling on the back of the tab while still being able to share the page with you. Today's Lesson From The Craft Room: Boldly Go Where You Haven't Gone Before!
If you told me I would be belly dancing in the morning at Denver International Airport and then belly dancing in the evening in a hotel lobby and then outdoors on a major street in the pouring rain...I would have told you you were nuts!!!!! But the truth is...you're not nuts! I was the nutty one - out there in all my belly dancing glory at the airport, the hotel and on the rain-filled street. Mind you, I had not belly danced before. But my friend Caitlin has a dance studio (Bella Diva Dance) and she was gathering people together to participate in an international shimmy mob to promote awareness around domestic violence. How could I say no?! I had every reason to say no: lack of belly dance knowledge; perceived inability to memorize steps in any order; a whole bunch of self-consciousness when doing something I haven't done before in a public setting...and a whole other host of reasons. But heck - you only live once - so why not boldly go where you haven't gone before! As a result, I now have memories that will last a lifetime and I met some incredible people on the journey. I was even able to bring some of my creativity to the experience by painting my shirt :) The design on the back of the shirt was inspired by search I did online for henna designs and lotus flowers. I wish I knew who the original artist was so that I could give them full credit for the beautiful design. I did a little improvising, but not much! I used the design on the back as a platform to launch from for creating the flower on the front. That one I did on my own :) I used Tulip Slick dimensional fabric paint and I just added the gems on blobs of paint...and they stayed on! We'll see if they make it through a hand washing :) Now I have to go and find the next place I can boldly go where I haven't gone before!!!! How 'bout you????

It is something we all know and yet, when we experience the duality, it can put us into a tailspin. Today I pray for the ability to hold the opposites with peace and acceptance. May I see the duality in all of its wholeness - the pleasure with the pain, the release with the stress, the connection with the loneliness.
