Morning Prayer Mixed-Media Piece

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Prove To Yourself What You Are Capable Of!
I enjoy watching the Tour de France on tv every year.  This year has been no exception.  There is something about watching people test their limits that I find very inspiring.  During the first 10 days of the Tour, Andrew Talansky experienced a few setbacks - he crashed twice, very heavily and learned about his ability to combat pain.  During Stage 11 he was in so much pain that he pulled to the side of the road and his Team Director, Robbie Hunter, spoke with him for about four minutes.  In an interview with ESPN.com, Talansky described what Robbie Hunter said to him on the side of the road.  This is a small excerpt from that conversation:  This is a choice only you can make, but take a moment to make sure you make the one you're going to be happy with, make it not out of a place of emotion or anger or fear, but make it out of what can you do, what's possible.
As I watched that conversation without being able to hear the words, my assumption was that Andrew Talansky would abandon the Tour.  I, however, was wrong.  I watched in amazement as Talansky got back on his bike and actually fought his way to the end of the race that day.  Only he knew how his body was feeling.  Only he knew if he could continue.  I was crying as I watched him cross the finish line that day.  Talansky summed up what he learned that day in this way:  The sport constantly has redefined for me what I'm capable of mentally and physically. That day showed me when I need it, there's more in my body, more I can do than even I can believe sometimes. I think it's a day that will serve me very well in the future.  As artists, each day we have an opportunity to constantly redefine what we are capable of.  You can do more than even you can believe sometimes.  You just have to be willing to make the decision to go for the ride!
Today I am sharing a small mixed-media piece that I created.  I am calling it Morning Prayer.  It began with an upcycled dryer sheet and kept going from there :)  I enjoyed the ride :)

A Little Basket Weaving

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Get Inspired At An Arts Festival!
Over the 4th of July holiday weekend I walked around the Cherry Creek Arts Festival here in Denver.  I am always inspired and amazed by the creative energy exploding from the booths at these festivals!!!!  There was a beautiful booth filled with incredible basket weavings and forms and I came home wanting to try to basket weave!  I headed straight to YouTube and found this video.  It gave me enough info to improvise with materials that I had (instead of "reeds" I used yarn, felt and even transparency sheets!  My advice?  Get inspired at an arts festival!!!!

Upcycled Denim Bookmark

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Put Your Head Into The Darkness And Listen
Allowing yourself to just "be" gives you the opportunity to finally listen to the small voice that can so easily get buried inside of you.  I love creating pieces like this upcycled denim bookmark because the process allows me to just be.  I have no outcome in mind.  I just start putting paint to the "canvas" of the denim and let go and allow things to happen.  Creating in this way is a way for me to "put my head into the darkness" - the unknown of the creative process - and just listen to my inner voice.  How can you put your head into the darkness and listen?

Kinda Eclectic Kindness Card

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  You Don't Have To Be "Productive," You Just Have To Be
Today's lesson is one that I am learning myself.  Somehow I've bought into the cultural imperative that we should always be producing something - minutes spent staring at the clouds are minutes you could be "doing" something.  Well to heck with that!  Staring at the clouds IS doing something!  It is doing exactly what your soul needs you to be doing.  When did I buy into this "productivity" myth?  I wonder if this is why smartphones are so successful?  They create the guise of being productive.  Yet I recognize that the exact opposite is happening for me.  So many minutes spent surfing, checking, jumping from here to there.  I'm done.  I'm taking back my control.  I'm allowing myself to just be - that will be my measure of productivity - how many minutes did I allow myself to just "be" today?
This was the first card I made using the new Kinda Eclectic stamp set...and I can't wait to make another!  I also used the new In Colors!  I go through a bit of back and forth every year when it comes to deciding whether or not to purchase the new In Colors.  And, as you can see...I gave in this year :)  I'm glad I did!  Somehow the colors always look so much better in person than in the catalog!  This card was created with one layer and then the addition of a punched butterfly.  So quick and easy and yet so pretty!  I hope you like it!

Stampin Sponges Organization

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Small Victories Matter When It Comes To Organizing!
Maybe today's post won't have you jumping up and down for joy like I was when I put all these little sponges into this plastic organizer...but I gotta tell you that this little box absolutely makes me smile!  These little sponges have a mind of their own and they have been known to find their way into all kinds of secret hiding places...or a drawer where they are all thrown together like one big pool party!  So now they have found a cozy little home.  A place to call their own.  A place where I can easily find them, use them, and put them away.  Yes, the small victories matter when it comes to organizing!

Rolled Magazine Pages

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Elevate The Detritus Of Your Life
Junk mail. Realtor magazines.  Phone books.  It seems there is an endless cycle of print, deliver, recycle, repeat.  I decided to interrupt the cycle in an attempt to elevate some of the detritus of my life.  I created a small wall sculpture using the pages from a junk mail magazine from a real estate company.  I believe I succeeded in elevating the detritus.  I also believe I succeeded in straining every muscle in my hands!  Time to recuperate!  Next time I'll work with newsprint (thinner and easier to roll!) :)

Wetlands One Stamp Birthday Card and Prayer Request

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Put A Stamp On It!
I needed a quick and easy birthday card and this qualified!!!!  My friend Doris gave me a wonderful collection of beautiful papers (thank you soooo much Doris) and I went into the stash and found this wonderful paper with a leaf motif.  I cut the paper down and folded it in half and just added the birthday sentiment from the Wetlands stamp set.  One simple stamp is all it took (plus a piece of card stock adhered on the inside for writing).  Sometimes all it takes is one simple stamp and you're done!
I originally created/wrote this post about a week ago.  I am very sad to say that my beautiful friend Doris had to say goodbye to her precious poodle Teesha over the weekend :(  Teesha was so very young and was overcome by a very aggressive disease.  Please place Doris and her family in your prayers.  They need your strength.  This is a picture of a visit I recently had with Doris' beautiful fur-kids.  Teesha is the beautiful girl in white in the center and the other gorgeous guys are Toby and Tucker.  Thank you for your prayers.

Nuts About You Card

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  It Doesn't Have To Be An Earth-Shattering Work Of Art.  It Just Has To Be
Oy the pressure!  We can sit down in our craft space and feel the weight of the world on our shoulders.  The idea that was have to create some type of Earth-shattering, phenomenal work of art.  I love when cards like this happen in the midst of other projects.  It reminds me that what I create does not have to be an Earth-shattering work of art.  I just need to let my creativity happen.  I need to let it be - no matter what it is.  In the being, it is enough.
Today's non-Earth-shattering card was made with the adorable Nuts About You hostess set!  I colored the toothpick with some ink and made a banner worthy of any squirrel :)  If the squirrels in my backyard could carry little flags, I bet they would carry these...until the birdseed was no longer there..then they would need new flags that said, "More Nuts Please!"

Hang In There Card

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Rome Wasn't Built In A Day!
How many times have you heard that expression?!  Today it really hit home for me as I continued to try to find the strength to organize and clean up the clutter in my craft room.  It feels like I'm hitting a wall every 2 minutes.  Small burst of energy that fizzle out into bouts of melancholy.  Who knew that trying to clear the clutter could be so agonizing...I have to keep reminding myself that Rome wasn't built in a day.  My craft room (and office) didn't take a day to get into the states they are currently in and I can't expect that in one simple day it will all go "poof" and disappear and be magically clean and wonderful!  I know that clearing the clutter is bringing up long-seated issues for me - the issues have been creeping into my dreams.  Or maybe I should be calling them nightmares.  But at least the issues are rising to the surface.  As I unbury my craft room I am unearthing myself.  Yes, Rome wasn't built in a day.
Today I'm sharing a very apt card for today's lesson!  I am loving the adorable creatures in the Nuts About You hostess set!  This easy card began with a line across a piece of Crumb Cake card stock.  Then I added some simple stamping and I was done!  I hope you like it :)

Blended Bloom Monogrammed Card Set

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Watch For Signs That There Is Something Bigger Than You At Work In The Universe
I was walking the other day and saw a big yellow butterfly fluttering by.  I began to wonder if it was lonely for that butterfly to be flying around all by itself.  I realized I had never seen more than one at any one time.  As I turned down my driveway at the end of that walk...there they were!  Two of those gorgeous yellow butterflies flying together - as if they were playing - in the sky!  It didn't end there.  I went outside a few times during the day just for a breath of fresh air and a break and both times one of those yellow butterflies flew by.  I don't believe in coincidence.  I believe those butterflies were all signs.  Signs that someone was listening to my questioning thoughts.  Signs that there is something much bigger than me at work in the Universe.  I am once again humbled and awed.
Today I wanted to share a few monogrammed notecards I put together for a friend's birthday!  I love the blended bloom stamp all on its own - the graphic statement it makes when it is stamped with Tuxedo Black ink on Very Vanilla card stock.  I teamed it with a retired favorite - the Lovely Letters alphabet and the happy birthday wishes sentiment from Petite Pairs.  I just placed the cards in a box with stamped envelopes and made a quick little tag!  Such a quick and easy way to create a gift made with love!

Our Creations Art Journal Page for Paper Crafter's Library

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Sometimes It's As Simple As Seeing A Hummingbird
I was having a few rough days earlier in the week.  I think it's because I'm tired.  Ready to just relax and get off the the hamster wheel for a bit.  Yes, I am in need of some downtime.  So I was sitting outside, having some breakfast, feeling a bit down...and I looked up and there was a hummingbird at the hummingbird feeder!  This is not a common occurrence in the backyard and it's the first hummingbird I've seen this year!  My mood instantly lightened!  It's a great reminder for me - that when I'm feeling down sometimes all it takes is something as simple as seeing a hummingbird and that can lift me up.  I don't need something grand or over-the-top - I just need to be open to taking notice of what is right there in my backyard to make me smile :)
Today I am sharing an art journal page that I created for Paper Crafter's Library.  I love this quote by Thich Nhat Hanh.  I hope you do too :)  If you are interested in the full step-by-step videos for how I created this page, head on over to Paper Crafter's Library by clicking on the badge in the upper-right hand corner of my blog and consider subscribing.  They have so much to offer in one convenient place!
I also can't resist sharing this AMAZING video with you!!!!!!  If you love paper...you'll LOVE this video!!!!  Enjoy!!!

Bloom With Hope Creating Pretty Cards - Sketch Challenge #36

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Sometimes You Need To Push Yourself To Places You Don't Think You Can Go!
Swimming is teaching me so much about myself and about life in general.  Earlier this week I went to swim class and we were doing 50m intervals.  I hadn't been swimming much due to all of my work travel so I was a bit concerned at my ability to maintain stamina for eight intervals!  So I began by telling myself to just take it slow.  Sure enough, my first interval was my slowest.  But as we continued through the intervals I got faster and faster - with the last one being my fastest.  Afterwards my coach talked about how going out slow is challenging because once you are going slow it's hard to motivate yourself to pick up the pace.  Instead, if you go out fast and set a faster cadence, it's easier to maintain that pace and, if you can't, at least your slower pace will likely not be that slow since you have the seconds from your faster earlier pace still going for you.  I know the same is true about creating art.  It's easy to go slow...or not at all!  To go into the craft room and just sit and stare.  What if we were bold and just picked up the nearest ink color, stamp, paintbrush, clay and just did something - out of the gate just moving fast?  What would happen?  We can always go a bit more slowly once we start out with our fastest cadence.  I might have to give this a try!  I'll let you know what happens :)
Today I am sharing my card for the Creating Pretty Cards - Sketch Challenge #36 over at Craft Project Central.  I've really been enjoying the Bloom With Hope hostess set and my Stampin' Blendabilities.  There is something very peaceful about coloring :)  I also love that you can use your Blendabilities to color adhesive pearls, rhinestones, even the faceted buttons!  Nothing is safe ;)  Head on over to Craft Project Central and participate in the challenge.  You might win a free month membership!

String Art

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Dabble :)
Dab-ble:  verb - immerse "one's hands or feet) partially in water and move them around gently; take part in an activity in a casual or superficial way
I like to dabble!  I see something and wonder how I might make it or do it or try it.  That happened with string art this past weekend.  I wondered how to make it; what it would feel like to make; what it would lead to.  Right now I can't answer the third wondering ie what it might lead to, but I can answer the how to make it and what it feels like and I know I am going to do more dabbling!  Sometimes casually trying something can ignite a flame that leads to a deeper immersion.  I am looking forward to get tangled in more string!!!!!

Father's Day Pop-Up Box Card

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Expand Time By Being Mindful
It is so easy to say that we are too busy to do something.  Too pressured by the ticking minutes.  Too rushed to stop for a minute.  What I have been finding is that I can make time expand by being mindful.  Instead of allowing myself to multi-task, simul-task or go into task overdrive I am choosing moments to just be mindful of exactly what I am doing.  When I give something or someone my full attention, time seems to expand for me.  When I am harried and rushing, the clock seems to work against me.  When I am calm, the clock slows down for me.  How can you expand time by being mindful with what you are doing?
Today I attempted my first pop-up box card (you can find a tutorial on Splitcoast...and I may attempt a tutorial of my own at some point in the not-too-distant future :).  I brought together old stamp sets, new Typeset designer series paper and some other non-SU! odds and ends to create this card.  I love how this card is a surprise for the recipient since it arrives flat with just the outside paper showing.  I even created a matching envelope using the Typeset DSP.  I know this is not the last pop-up box card I will be making :)

Woven Painted Paper Card

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  Wake Up And Create!
Yesterday morning I woke up very early.  I had traveled earlier in the week and my internal clock is a bit out of whack.  I was lying in bed staring at the ceiling and finally decided I should just go into the craft room and start painting.  My wonderful friend Doris provided me with some beautiful papers and I have thoroughly been enjoying using some of them to paint on.  The textures are wonderful!  So I took out a piece of the textured paper and began playing with layers - paint, stamping, drawing with permanent ink, tissue paper, gesso...I kept adding until I was pleased with the result.  Layering is really fascinating to me right now.  Layering is like life.  You can be pleased one moment and the next minute you are totally unhappy with how things are going...but if you just keep going you may find yourself in a beautiful new place that you never expected.  I'm glad I kept going :)
Once the paper was dry I decided to cut it into strips and do some paper weaving.  I even punched a butterfly from the paper to add to the card.  What did I learn?  Sometimes the perfect thing to do is wake up and create! :)

Layered and Painted Paper

Today's Lesson From The Craft Room:  I Am Intrigued By Layers
The warm weather causes us to shed layers of clothes.  People have many layers - some they share and some they keep hidden.  Art can have layers of meaning.  Paper can be layered with paint, ink, tissue, more paper...and on, and on, and on.  Today I found myself in the craft room intrigued by the idea of layers.  I wonder how many layers I can add to a base of paper?  I wonder if I will try to answer that question? :)  Today I began with a beautiful piece of paper that was given to me by a wonderful friend :)  It started with ink and paint and then gelatos and then tissue and painted paper...and on and on and on.  I love the depth and interest that this creates.  I love what is showing and what is hidden.  I am showing you a picture of one of the layers and then more layers placed on top of it.  It's intriguing to think I could keep going and no one would ever know what is underneath...not even me...unless I captured the layers with photos.  Yes, I am intrigued by layers!
